We live in the south, so our mayflies usually appear in April. If a mayfly appears in April, is it still called a Mayfly?
We’ve had a wonderful warm spell over the last two or three weeks and everything outdoors has popped into bloom. It’s beautiful, and a bit early this year (odd after the unusually cold winter we had). We’ve even been sleeping with the windows open. The dogwood trees are blooming already, well before Easter – and Easter is early this year.
Another thing that is early is the mayflies, or should I say Aprilflies? Thing is, it’s still March. If a mayfly appears in March, is it still called a Mayfly? Goodness, now we have Marchflies!
(Here’s a great fact sheet on mayflies, another resource for a spring “teachable moment” opportunity.)
