I have to tell you what I did. I posted a message on a work-at-home message board yesterday about exercising and that I hadn't been using my hula hoop lately. I encouraged myself with that post so decided to pull out the hula hoop last night.
Wow, was I going to town! I went probably five minutes without stopping, maybe longer, although I almost lost it a couple of times so had to get those hips spinning pretty fast to keep the hoop up there! Well, the hula hoop that I have is one with water inside, which makes a nice little "whoosh" and actually keeps the thing moving nicely. There's some scientific principle there, I'm sure, but that's beside the point, or maybe it is the point but, as you know if you've read some of my other posts here, I'm no scientist! Anyway, when I finally put the hoop away, I felt it and thought hmm, this doesn't feel as heavy as I remember it feeling. In fact, I think the water must have evaporated out of it or something. I felt at the "seam" and there was a little dampness, but I really didn't think much of it. So I put it away then went back in the living room, sat down, and what did I notice but water droplets all over the coffee table. And the floor. And the end table. Oh, my goodness, water was everywhere!
The whole time I was wildly flinging those hips, the hoop was spewing water out all over the place - and I hadn't even noticed it. (My cat had, though. I had wondered what he kept sniffing at all over the floor while I was working out.) So, I got paper towels and ended up wiping up a good bit of the wood floor from the kitchen to the living room (I had been hooping in the middle of our open floorplan) plus the two glass tables and the magazines on top, as well as the edges of a few chairs. No damage done and my tables and floors got an unscheduled cleaning. Actually I thought it was pretty funny and, indeed, I got two workouts for the price of one with crawling all over the floor wiping it up. It shouldn't happen again; I think the hoop is plenty empty by now!
I still recommend hula-hoop workouts, but perhaps, if you try it, you should pass on the water-filled ones!
